Spitalfields Got Soul 2011

As investors in the local community, Exemplar was delighted to be asked to sponsor the annual concert celebrating Black History Month held at the Old Spitafields Market in London in October. Black History Month is an observance of the history of the African diaspora in a number of countries outside of Africa and celebrates community.

The event was opened by Spitalfields Councillor Helal Abbas together with the leader of the LBTH Labour group, Councillor Joshua Peck.  The event was hosted by Phil Gannon and backed by the Mighty Dukes Band.  House diva Angie Brown, Manuela Pannizio, Noreen Stewart and Ricci P Washington all paid tribute to great singers of our past and present including Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley. Other highlights included the music maestro Rick James on his guitar, poetry from Anna Mae, the break dancing phenomenon of Two and a Half Men (Britians Got Talent) and the awesome Spitalfields Bangra dancers.

A hugely fun afternoon with great spirit and entertainment all round. Our thanks to the organisers from Crystal Enterprises.

The Middlesex – Public Exhibition

Exemplar Properties and its partners would like to thank all the people who took the time to come to our public exhibition, which displayed our initial concept designs for the redevelopment of the The Middlesex site.

The response was fantastic, with over 485 people coming to visit over the six days of the exhibition and with many providing us with useful feedback and comments.

We are now in the process of furthering our designs with the aim of submitting a planning application later in the summer with the intention of commencing development as soon as planning consent is granted.

For those who were unable to make the public exhibition, click here to take you through to the dedicated website to download the materials that were on display at the public exhibition.

The Middlesex

Exemplar and its partners are pleased to report that significant progress has been made in preparing inital designs for the redevelopment of The Middlesex site.

Signature architects, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Sheppard Robson, have been working together to prepare a masterplan and design concepts that will be on display at a public exhibition to be held on the site from 27th June to 2nd July.

Over 80 interested parties came to the site on the first day of the exhibition – we hope that as many people as possible can come and have a look at the plans – and most importantly let us know what they think – and hopefully we can include your feedback in the final plans for the site.

Callum

Exemplar were delighted to be able to provide Callum Stidston-Nott, a first year Real Estate Management Student from Oxford Brookes University, with a week of work experience recently.

As developers we get involved in a wide range of property activities, such as building design, market research, letting, construction, planning and working with joint venture partners.  Our aim was to expose Callum to as many of these workstreams as possible in the  short term he was with us.

This included a construction site meeting with Construction Partner Campbell MacDougall, Design Team Meetings, Stakeholder Construction Meeting, Verified Views Meeting and a Planning Strategy Meeting.  Michael Bucknell also took Callum through the contents of a development process and development appraisal lecture he gives annually at Cambridge and introduced him to many of the systems used in property development.  Callum was also assigned a project to research retail targets for one of Exemplar’s projects and managed to squeeze in a tour of some competing office buildings in the City and attended a residential research breakfast held by one of the leading residential agencies.

The Lord Mayors Show 2010

Exemplar was delighted to support the Museum of London on the creation of a giant artwork based on drawings of the archaeological finds and history of Spitalfields that were created by students from Swanlea School in Whitechapel. The 45-foot-long canvas shows five scenes from Roman, medieval, Huguenot, Jewish and present-day Spitalfields. The artwork was brought to life at the Lord Mayors Show by members of the original Spitalfields team and Exemplar, as well members of the local community and traders from Spitalfields Market, walking alongside the canvas in period costume. A great day out and we were delighted to be able to support the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Michael Bear, on his inauguration day.

The finished artwork is now on display at Swanlea School.

Exemplar Hosts Cambridge University

We were pleased to recently welcome the Land Economy course of Cambridge University who inspected our development at 101 Cambridge.

Firstly we arranged for two members of our development team, architects Scott Brownrigg and Quantity Surveyors from EC Harris, to present at a course lecture and run a workshop to assist students on design and cost matters relating to development options. This was followed up with a site visit to 101 Cambridge to show the students a development in the middle of the construction period complimented with a session on development appraisals and financial models with Michael Bucknell, Senior Development Manager at Exemplar Properties.

Dr Helen Bao from Cambridge University commented: “Our students found the seminar and site visit very interesting and informative. In particular, they found Gerard’s in-house cost figures, Ed’s answers to questions regarding design and planning issues, and Michael’s demonstration of the financial analysis of the site very helpful. Thanks very much for sharing this information with us. We run this real estate development course every year. It would be great if our students can share your experience and expertise again.”

Walks and Talks

Exemplar were proud to be lead sponsor of the Design for London, London Open City exhibition at Somerset House that looked at the ways in which the city is transforming and aimed to offer Londoners the opportunity to contribute to the projects development.

The Exemplar walks and talks series opened up different perspectives on the development of successful city spaces, provoking interesting questions and fresh points of view.

Drawing on the theme of Open City, we hosted three talks which set out to raise questions on how we can approach the revitalisation of the city. Four inspirational speakers drew on their own experience to raise questions about how London can be transformed, by responding to major events, initiating creative thinking and truly integrating the desires of the resident population.

The walks explored the city spaces themselves, drawing out hidden gems, uncovering alternative narratives, and discovering different ways of viewing and occupying the urban realm.

London Open City Exhibition

Exemplar sponsored this exciting exhibition held at Somerset House. The exhibition, focused on the forces that have shaped London’s public realm and asks how we can make our city easier – and more enjoyable – to use.

As part of the exhibition, General Public Agency for Exemplar made a film of the Aldgate Public Realm Strategy to show how the removal of gyratories can contribute to the regeneration of this important part of London.

Our competitive streak extends to the slopes as well, and for the past six years we have organised an annual ski trip attended by senior property professionals and clients. We have so far skied Courcheval, Val d’Isere, St Anton and Isola, with attendances ranging from 20 to 90! The trips always cumulate in a downhill race organised for us by ESF.
